Where to Stay on Lamu Island?
There are several excellent locations to stay in Lamu island. We slept in the little settlement of Shela, which is located on Lamu's southeast corner, adjacent to the island's lovely 12km coastline. However, you may stay in Lamu Town or across the water on Manda Island, which is not on Lamu but is only a short boat trip away.
Shela
- Banana House: This is where we stayed, and I liked it. Our Swahili-style room was nice, the pool was stunning, the surroundings were attractive and homey, and there was an onsite yoga studio.
- Jua House is a wonderful and sophisticated Swahili-style bed and breakfast in the center of Shela, near Banana House.
- The Peponi Hotel is a Lamu institution that has a beautiful pool and a famous restaurant. Peponi has traditionally been the place to stay in Lamu. It's a tiny hotel on the beach in Shela, with rooms intended to pay homage to the island's Arabic past. There's a romantic pool dining area ideal for honeymooners, as well as the famed Fisherman's Bar for fun evenings.
- Dudu Villas & Lamu Backpackers: This hostel is ideal for those on a tight budget. It's a little walk from the main center of Shela, but accommodations start at roughly $8, so you can't complain.
- Kijani Hotel: Kijani Hotel is a lovely hotel with only 10 rooms housed in structures that represent the finest of Swahili architecture. Comfortable lodgings are roomy and adorned with antiques. In addition, there is a freshwater pool and a rooftop restaurant that serves local fish and Swahili curry.
Lamu Town
- Makubwa House: This magnificent hotel is situated in the heart of the ancient town.
- JamboHouse: Affordable lodging in the center of Lamu Town.
- Lamu House Hotel: This wonderful hotel is situated on the seashore. They feature a lovely pool and restaurant (Moonrise Restaurant), which is a popular gathering place. I haven't eaten here, but it gets decent ratings.
Manda Island
- The Majlis Resort is the most luxurious hotel in the area, with a direct beachfront view of Shela. Even if you don't stay, consider visiting the restaurant for a special treat.
- Diamond Beach Village is a family-run eco-resort located directly on the beach next to The Majlis Resort. This is a nice option that will not break the wallet.
Kipungani Beach
- Cabanas Eco Lodge: Located on the far southwest tip of Lamu, this eco-lodge combines Kenya and Hawaii. You can also come for lunch and supper. If you're up for it, you can also take a three-hour trek along the coastline from Shela.
