Is Nairobi safe for tourists?
Nairobi requires caution because of crime, terrorism, unrest and traffic risks; the risk varies by area and circumstances. Precautions may reduce exposure to some risks, but cannot eliminate them. Check current government advice before deciding where to go.
Which areas require extra caution?
The U.S. Department of State rates Kenya overall at Level 2, but advises against visiting Eastleigh and Kibera in Nairobi because of crime and kidnapping. The UK FCDO also identifies Eastleigh, the Central Business District, Mathare and Kibera as areas with higher crime risks. These warnings have different scopes; read the full advice relevant to you.
How can tourists reduce risks?
- Keep valuables discreet and avoid isolated streets.
- Arrange reputable transport and check the driver and vehicle details.
- Keep vehicle doors locked, windows closed and belongings out of sight.
- Avoid demonstrations and leave room to change travel plans.
- Choose accommodation with security measures and follow local security advice.
- Do not physically resist a robbery.
Is Nairobi safe at night or for solo travelers?
Avoid walking after dark. Arrange transport between venues, even for short journeys. Solo visitors should plan movements carefully and let someone know their itinerary. Keep your drink in sight and do not accept drinks from strangers.
What about terrorism and airport transfers?
Terrorism remains a concern, including at places visited by tourists. Follow security instructions and monitor official alerts. For airport transfers, the FCDO recommends Mombasa Road or the Nairobi Expressway and flags higher carjacking risk on Airport South Road and Jogoo Road. Confirm the route with your driver and allow extra time.
Wear a seatbelt and use a reputable driver. Protests can disrupt roads and airports with little notice. Check transport arrangements before setting off.
What should I check before departure?
Read the latest advisory from your own government, check the areas on your itinerary and save your hotel's and insurer's contact details. In Kenya, Smartraveller lists 999 for police and medical emergencies. Treat precautions as risk reduction rather than a guarantee of safety.
