What is the weather in Kenya in August?
August is considered one of the best months to visit Kenya due to its mild temperatures and minimal rainfall, making it ideal for safari travel. The cool, dry climate in August is especially favorable for those planning safaris.
Temperatures
- Nairobi and Central Highlands
- Daytime highs: around 20–25°C (68–77°F)
- Minimum temperatures: fall to 10 to 13 °C (50 to 55 °F), notably at higher altitudes.
- Days may be cool in the mornings and evenings, hence bringing layers is recommended.
- Temperatures are moderate and stable, creating comfortable conditions for outdoor activities and game drives.
- Coastal Areas (Mombasa, Diani, Malindi)
- The coastal areas are warmer and more humid.
- Daytime highs: around 28–30°C (82–86°F)
- The ocean remains warm with comfortable swimming temperatures, and although there is some humidity, it’s not excessive.
- Northern and Eastern Kenya (semi-arid regions like Turkana, Samburu)
- These regions are warmer and drier, especially during the day when average temperatures reach more than 30°C (86°F).
Rainfall
- While most regions are dry, the Central Highlands (e.g. around Nairobi) may still experience occasional drizzle, especially in the mornings.
- There is a slight rainfall in comparison to those of the March-May long rains or the October-December short rains.
- Safari parks such as Maasai Mara and Amboseli are normally arid and better in the aspect of game viewing since the animals congregate around water points.
- Northern Kenya remains largely arid with virtually no rain during this month.
Wildlife and Safari
August is one of the best months for wildlife viewing in Kenya. In particular:
- The Great Migration is underway in the Maasai Mara, as millions of wildebeest and zebras cross from the Serengeti into Kenya.
- August is peak season for witnessing the dramatic river crossings at the Mara River — a bucket-list wildlife spectacle that draws photographers and safari-goers from around the world.
- Dry weather conditions ensure that animals are often seen around rivers and waterholes, where they gather.
Travel Considerations
- During peak tourist season, roads may be congested, national parks or hotels may be crowded, so prices will be higher.
- Most of the roads are dry and accessible, except that it is dusty in rural places.
- Seaside resorts also have a rich environment, though not as humid as in wet seasons.
August in Kenya is the time when the weather is cool and dry inland, warm along the coast and it is an incredible experience of wildlife. It is one of the best months to go on a safari and also spend time on the beach
