How to get to Kitui from Nairobi?

Kitui is the administrative capital of Kitui County and one of the major regional centers in eastern Kenya, boasting a rich cultural heritage, vibrant markets, and being close to tourist attraction sites like Nzambani Rock and Mwingi National Reserve. 

The town is located about 170–190 km east of Nairobi, depending on the route taken. The connection between Nairobi and Kitui is generally convenient, though travel conditions may vary depending on the season and road conditions. This is the correct and current information about the mode of transport between Kitui and Nairobi.

1. Travel by Road (Most Convenient Method)

Road travel is the most common and convenient way to reach Kitui from Nairobi.   It is a normal 3.5- 4.5 hour trip depending on the traffic, road conditions, and weather conditions.

Private Car or Self-Drive

There are two main tarmacked routes:

Nairobi – Athi River – Machakos – Katangi – Kitui (via A109/Mombasa Road)
This is the most widely used path. Most sections are tarmacked and in fair condition, though parts of the road—especially between Machakos and Katangi—can become slippery or rough during the rainy season.

Nairobi – Thika – Matuu – Kanyonyoo – Kitui (via A2/Thika Road)

This route is often used by travelers passing through Thika or eastern parts of Machakos County. Road conditions vary, with some sections being smooth while others may be rough, especially closer to Kitui.

Best For: Families, business trips, tourists exploring attractions around Kitui

2. Matatus and Buses (Budget-Friendly Option)

Public transport is the most affordable way to travel to Kitui.

Main departure points:

  • Machakos Country Bus Station (Nairobi CBD)
  • Mlolongo / Athi River stages
  • Accra Road (for Kitui-bound shuttles)

Cost: KES 400–700 per person
 Travel Time: 4–5 hours

Shuttles are generally more comfortable and make fewer stops.

3. Private Shuttle Services

Other firms provide bookable shuttle vans to travelers between Nairobi and Kitui, which is a secure and more comfortable alternative to the normal matatus.   Shuttles operate on fixed departure schedules, allowing passengers to plan their trips more reliably compared to public matatus

Reservation of seats can be done beforehand, and this means that the travelers have seat reservations to ensure travelers avoid last-minute crowds and secure a comfortable spot.   The vehicles are usually cleaner, less congested, and the operators are experienced in driving the vehicles and care about the passengers.

Since they have fewer stops to make in between, shuttle vans tend to accomplish the trip more quickly.   This alternative is particularly perfect for business travellers, visiting travellers with luggage, and anybody who wants to have a balance in terms of comfort, cost, and convenience when travelling between Nairobi and Kitui.

4. No Commercial Flights

Kitui does not have a commercial airport, and no scheduled domestic flights operate between Nairobi and Kitui

Small airstrips can be used by private charters in the county, but this is not common and generally expensive

Therefore, the only feasible means of transport to Kitui is through road transport.
