How to get to Narok from Nairobi?
Narok County is home to the world-renowned Maasai Mara National Reserve, and Narok town serves as a key gateway for travelers heading to the reserve. Narok is located approximately 140–150 km west of Nairobi by road, and it is easy to access by various modes of transportation, which fit into various budgets and traveling styles.
1. Travel by Road (Most Common Method)
The most practical and common way to reach Narok is by road. The trip usually takes 2.5–3.5 hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions.
a. Private Car or Self-Drive
Several routes can be used to drive between Nairobi and Narok, either through the A104 Mai Mahiu route or the Ngong–Suswa route, which can be less congested than the Mai Mahiu route at certain times, though it may be affected by weather and visibility conditions. The road is generally in good condition, though there are a few parts where it can be rough during the rainy season.

A private car is especially convenient if you plan to continue onward to the Maasai Mara.
b. Taxi or Private Transfer
Many tour companies and hotels offer private transfers between Nairobi and Narok. Prices vary depending on the vehicle type—sedan, van, or 4x4 vehicle.
- Estimated cost: KES 6,000–12,000, depending on the provider and vehicle type.
- Best for: Tourists who prefer comfort and door-to-door service
2. Shuttle Buses & Matatus (Public Transport)
Budget travelers can reach Narok easily using matatus or shuttle buses
- Departure points: Nyamakima, Koja Stage, Afya Centre in Nairobi

Shuttles are generally more comfortable than matatus, and they make fewer stops.
3. Organized Safari Tours
In the case of going to the Maasai Mara, several safari tour operators extend their packages to transport you to Narok (and further on to the Mara). This option is a convenient and cost-effective choice for many international tourists.
4. No Commercial Flights to Narok
Narok town is not served by any regular commercial passenger flights. The closest airstrips are located within the Maasai Mara. These are flights out of Wilson Airport in Nairobi.
For Narok Town itself, road travel is the only practical option.
Final Travel Tips
- Start your journey early to avoid heavy Nairobi traffic.
- Carry some cash for small purchases and transport fares.
- During the rainy season, some roads may become muddy. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended if you plan to travel beyond Narok toward the Maasai Mara, especially during the rainy season or on unpaved roads.
Narok is easy to reach from Nairobi, and through its scenic road, and the various means of transport, the trip itself is an enjoyable experience in the Kenyan adventure.
