How to get from Nakuru to Lake Baringo National Park?
There are various modes of transport available for traveling from Nakuru to Lake Baringo National Park, depending on your choice, budget, and time available. Nakuru and Lake Baringo are about 130 kilometres apart, and by road, it takes about 2 or 3 hours to travel
By Road:
Travelling by car is the most common way to get from Nakuru to Lake Baringo. The road journey is quite scenic and easy, with a drive through beautiful scenery along the Great Rift Valley.
- Private Car:
- In case you have your car at your disposal, travel is convenient and flexible. From Nakuru, take the B4 road heading north through Mogotio and Marigat, which leads directly to the Lake Baringo area. The road is mostly paved, though it becomes rougher closer to the lake. The road is well-paved, although there are some rough places further along, towards the lake.
- The commute is between 2 to 3 hours, varying depending on traffic and road use. Before making the trip, you’re recommended to inquire about roadwork and detours, especially in the rainy season.
- Public Transport:
- Public minibusses, known as matatus, also go between Nakuru and towns around Lake Baringo, like Kabarnet or Marigat. These buses are taken off at Nakuru main bus station. The journey takes about 3 to 4 hours; you will have to use either a taxi or a local bus to get to the park after being dropped off there.
- Use of public transport is less expensive, but may not be comfortable in peak traffic hours.
- Safari Tour Operators:
- If you want a more guided experience, you can book a safari tour or a personalized transfer with one of the locally based tour operators there in Nakuru. Most of such operators incorporate day tours or night tour packages, combining transport to and within the park. This will be a stress-free trip, also topped up by the fact that it will come along with a local guide who will give us facts about the place.
Best Time to Travel:
Although the roads can be passable all year round, the rainy seasons are from March to May (long rains) and October to December (short rains). The dry months of January–February and June–September are the best times to travel, with better road conditions and higher chances of wildlife sightings. Avoid March–June, as heavy rainfall can make trails and roads difficult to navigate.
Tips for the Journey:
- Take Cash: There is only so much cash available in ATMs after you are out of Nakuru. You should have sufficient Kenyan shillings to cover the cost of transport, park fees, and others.
- Plan Ahead: Take an early bus or train ride because travelling using public transport gives you a wider choice and a better opportunity to arrive at your destination before it gets dark.
- Road Conditions: It's a good idea to check on road conditions in case you are driving yourself; ideally, after heavy rain, to provide recent information on road conditions.
On reaching the Lake Baringo, one is welcomed with the relaxing environment alongside the wide variety of the ecosystem, including the renowned birdlife, reptiles, and other wildlife. This drive is worthwhile since the park offers its visitors a unique experience, especially for those who love nature.
