Kenya eTA Explained for Romanian citizens in 2026

If you are a Romanian citizen, traveling to Kenya is now easier than it has ever been. In 2024, Kenya introduced a modern alternative to the traditional visa. This system is known as the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) and is available to travelers from Romania and many other countries.

The Kenya eTA serves as the required travel authorization for Romanian citizens visiting Kenya, replacing the previous eVisa system. Romanian travelers no longer need to visit a Kenyan embassy or consulate. They can get their Kenya eTA with a simple online application.

Since January 2024, Kenya has removed the traditional visa requirement for all nationalities but requires travelers to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). This policy permits travelers to enter Kenya without obtaining an electronic visa (e-Visa) for stays of up to 90 days, whether for tourism or business.

As part of this visa waiver policy, Kenya has introduced the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).

All travelers must now apply for an eTA before traveling via the official Kenya immigration website.

Travelers applying from Romania must simply meet a few basic requirements to obtain the Kenya electronic travel authorization (ETA)

Kenya eTA for Romanian citizens

1. What is the Kenya eTA for Romanian citizens, and What Does It Do?

Romanian passport holders are required to obtain a Kenya eTA before traveling to Kenya.

The Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) allows Romanian travelers to visit Kenya for tourism, business, medical treatment, or to visit friends and relatives.

The Kenya eTA is an electronic document that must be processed through an online system that the Kenyan Government has created so that all applicants can obtain it.

The Kenya eTA application form is available online. This makes it simple to complete and submit for processing, saving you the time and effort of visiting your local Kenyan embassy.

Romanian travelers who wish to visit Kenya for reasons other than tourism, medical care, or business, or who wish to stay for more than 90 days, must first visit a Kenyan embassy or consulate, such as the Kenyan Embassy in Romania

Type of Kenya visa:

Romanian travelers may choose from the following Kenya travel authorization options, depending on the purpose of travel:

  • Kenya tourist visa: The Tourist ETA is valid for up to 90 days and allows a single entry into Kenya.
  • Kenya Transit ETA: This authorization allows travelers to stay in Kenya for up to three days.
  • Kenya Business ETA: This authorization allows a single-entry stay of up to 90 days in Kenya for business-related activities.
  • East Africa Tourist Visa: With the East Africa Tourist Visa, travelers may enter Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda multiple times within the visa’s validity period.

2. Kenya eTA/Evisa requirements for Romanian citizens:

What you should know right away is that the online application process is less rigorous than the one at the embassy. But that doesn't mean you can't put forth some effort. However, all you need to do is compile a few documents and information. Here are the Kenya eTA/Evisa requirements for Romanian citizens:

  • Valid passport – You cannot apply for a Kenya eTA online unless you have a valid passport that will be valid for at least another 6 months from the date of arrival in Kenya and have 02 blank pages.

  • A scan of the information page of your passport – we will ask you to upload it when you fill out the application form.

  • Digital passport photo – please ensure that the photo was taken recently and that it complies with all other requirements for a valid passport photo.

  • E-mail address- If you apply online, you will receive your eTA in PDF format via email. Before you leave, make sure to print at least one physical copy.

  • Flight ticket – this simply indicates that you intend to return to your country of origin before your eTA expires.

  • Travel plans shared. This may include submitting information about lodging, cities to be visited, and/or activities planned in the country.

  • Business documents (for Business e-visa): to get qualified, you need to provide an invitation letter from your company's partner in Kenya, a company COI, and your information card (staff ID/business card).

Romanian applicants must renew their passports before applying for a Kenya eTA if their passport is close to expiry.

Furthermore, dual nationals with multiple passports must ensure that they travel to Kenya using the same travel document that they used to request an eTA.

It is important to note that the Kenya eTA serves only as authorization to travel and does not guarantee entry nor is it a permission to enter the country. This permission can only be granted after immigration officials at the border crossing have verified the visitors' travel documents.
